Research Paper Assignment Description
Research Paper Assignment Description
Overview
The second piece of writing that you will do for this class is a research paper. This paper will build upon the work you have already begun in the bibliography and is intended to help you develop your ideas for the purpose of writing a better film critique later in the semester. The paper must be between 1200 and 1500 words, double-spaced with a reasonable font size, and all citations must be in MLA or Chicago style format.
What is this assignment?
This assignment is quite a bit different than the film critique that many of you have done for my classes before. It is intended to help you sharpen your ideas about a film’s historical accuracy and thus make the film paper a little easier. A research paper is simply a presentation of the research you’ve done over a topic or set of topics. For example, since we are watching Gladiator, let’s say you had a bibliography with books and articles on how gladiators actually lived and fought, the technology available at the time, the buildings in Rome in the 2nd century, and some of the people depicted in the film like Commodus or Marcus Aurelius. For the research paper you would go back to that bibliography and find the sources that were the most helpful for you and use those sources to write a paper explaining those things. This paper should have an introduction, telling me what you are writing about, followed by a series of body paragraphs explaining all your research to me, and finally a conclusion. You don’t have to critique any of these sources, all you have to do is tell me what they say in your own words and in an essay you have constructed. Your main job is to string together a presentation of the information you’ve learned concerning whatever topics you chose to research. For example you might have a paragraph about architecture and/ or the arena, another paragraph on the Marcus Aurelius or Commodus, and maybe a final one how gladiators lived and fought. Please remember that this is all leading up to a critique of the film, so make sure you are looking at things that have some part in the film. For example, it would be pretty useless to do research on Rome’s wars with Parthia. All I’m trying to say is help yourself and choose things for your research that have some relevance for the film we’re watching.
Important Things to Remember
Due Date: 11/5/17; submit via dropbox in the course Momentum site
1200 minimum (you can certainly write more)
All direct quotes must be properly cited and all paraphrases must be properly cited. Your work here is to put all this research together, but for this assignment most of what you will be writing will be the research of others, so you probably have a lot of citations in the paper. Failure to properly cite your sources in the paper will result in a lower grade and plagiarism will result in a 0 for the assignment.
You need to use at least ten of the sources from your bibliography assignment for this paper and at least seven of them must be from the library’s databases. You already have these sources in your bibliography, so the idea here is to build on what you have already done for a stronger paper.
I DO NOT want to know what an academic critic or another professional critic thought about the film. This warning includes director/ cast and crew commentaries. You may use these to get ideas, but they cannot be used as sources for this paper.
RESEARCH PAPER – TITLE, ABSTRACT, AND OUTLINE INSTRUCTIONS
Research Paper – Title, Abstract, and Outline Instructions
You will complete a series of interactive exercises to master current APA formatting for a title page, abstract, reference page, and outline. You will create a title page, abstract, and outline containing at least 3 references in a proper reference page for your research paper prior to submitting the final draft of your research paper. These 3 items will be submitted as 1 single assignment.
Title Page
You will provide a title page that contains the title, author, and institution behind the written assignment. This must be accurate to the current APA requirements as portrayed in the interactive presentations.
The Abstract
You will provide an abstract that contains a concise yet formally written overview of the content covered in your paper. The abstract must be 150–250 words. This must be accurate to the current APA requirements as portrayed in the interactive presentations.
The Outline
The outline serves as the primary structure for your final research paper. This will consist of 60–100 words. The outline will be submitted according to APA formatting with Level 1, Level 2, and if necessary, Level 3 headings. If you are unfamiliar with Level 1 and 2 headings, refer to the current APA manual.
The primary objective of the research paper outline is to see how well you have conceptually developed the content of the paper by on the research. A solid outline is an indicator of a solid paper. The outline does not require content to be written under any of the headings; it only requires that the headings be organized with proper flow beginning with an introduction and ending with a conclusion. Be sure to read the research paper requirements before developing your outline.
The outline must include at least 3 references you plan to use, and they must be listed in a current APA formatted reference section.
Submit this assignment by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of Module/Week 3.
Research Outline on Aristotle’s meaning of Tragic Hero in ‘Oedipus ‘Play’
Research Outline on Aristotle’s meaning of Tragic Hero in ‘Oedipus ‘Play’
Introduction
A tragedy in a piece of work, for example, a drama is defined as a character with noble character is brought into a disastrous end after engaging into a confrontation with a higher force. Later on, this character recognizes the implication of his deeds that led to his or her woes and admits a suitable punishment (Sophocles, p.11). According to Aristotle, tragedy portrays the fall of a moral individual over some disastrous error generating suffering as well as understanding the protagonist and therefore bringing some pity and fear on the audience part. In examining the issue of tragedy, the Oedipus play is discussed and analyzed in this paper. “Oedipus” is a play by Sophocles that tend to examine the classical use of dramatic literal devices of recognition and finding of oneself. The play centers on Oedipus, an individual who while in an attempt to escape from his fate, meets it unexpectedly.
Thesis
Aristotle has effectively used the character of Oedipus as a tragic hero example. In the play, Oedipus refuses is seen refusing to heed to the wise men, for example, Tiresias, who later foresees that Oedipus has murdered his father, Laius. Therefore, Oedipus exists as a tragic character as he fights against the powers of his fate. Moreover, his weakness status makes him pitiable, and this tends to bring some fear to the audience. Consequently, he led to his own downfall, by falling from his own domain and thus experiencing unjustifiable punishment (Finglass, p.21). Therefore Oedipus tragedy in the play exists in the king’s estimable hunt for openness as well as the search for truth, and this is characterized with obstruction from the individuals who tend to hide the truth. The paper discusses the standards that Aristotle outlines regarding the description of the Tragic Hero. It also shows in what ways Exemplifies or refutes Aristotle’s meaning of the term Tragic Hero.
Sophocles’ Oedipus characterizes Aristotle’s definition of a Tragic Hero
In the play, Oedipus who is the protagonist tends to exemplify the definition of a tragic hero by Aristotle. As discussed in the above discussion, Aristotle termed the tragic hero as an individual who is of great character and who lacks own apparent faults, falls from highest to lowest position possible (Kelly, p.13). After falling the individual develops to be the subject of discussion and pity to both the audience and the characters in the play.
Sophocles’ Oedipus refutes on Aristotle’s definition of a Tragic Hero
Aristotle also uses this book as the basis for criticizing Greek tragedies; this is due to the great tragedy that has appeared in this book “Oedipus the King.” By using the guidelines put forward by Aristotle in his book “Poetics” which was later re-published by F.L Lucas to judge whether Sophocles’ work is area tragedy we have to use the rules from other references so that we can come up with our own conclusion. This is because Aristotle had fewer rules hence Sophocles’ work being caught in every rule (Woodruff). According to his simple and few rules, Aristotle believes that each story should have a beginning that gives a clue about the main hero without giving a spoiler alert about the rest of the story. Then the body or the middle part. Lastly, the ending which connects the starting part of the middle to give the truth about the hero.
Conclusion
As seen in the above discussion, Oedipus is among the well-known tragic heroes in drama. He is a character whose fate leads him to a tragic defeat that tends to leave the audience and the other characters in the play feeling expressively overwhelmed. Therefore according to the definition of Aristotle’s meaning of a tragic hero, the Oedipus story brands him a tragic hero. However, in some instances, Oedipus tends to exemplify and refute Aristotle’s meaning of a tragic hero.
