Introduction
Tougher gun trafficking laws! Is it a solution to gun related crime in the American society or just another erroneous belief?
“After the tragedy that occurred at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, President Obama is seeking to change legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines, expand background checks, and toughen gun-trafficking laws.” Whether this is potentially a solution to the problem at hand or not is a matter of debate. However having read from the thoughts of fellow Americans expressed in an array of articles both in support of as well as in opposition to the president’s plan, I am inclined to oppose the mentality that having stricter gun laws will relieve our society of the gun related tragedies we often witness with the school in Newtown, Connecticut as my point of reference.
Discussion of 1st article:
(Con Gun Control, by Storm Paglia in the Broadside of George Mason University Students Newspaper)
In this article, the author argues firmly against gun control noting that it is a highly contested issue in the country with opinions cutting cross the social strata that even politicians are not left behind. The author contends that thought the importance background checks on guns purchased should not be undermined, it is worth acknowledging that very strict gun control only leaves the citizens unprotected and doesn’t concentrate much dispossessing the bad guys of the dangerous weapons but the vulnerable law-abiding citizens. He further asserts that passing of gun control law that seeks to outlaw the possession of assault rifles and high capacity magazines does not stop gun related accidents from occurring. He concludes that guns need to be left in the hands of good people and out of the hands of criminals which is a very daunting task.
In my own analysis this author has a generally logical viewpoint especially in reasoning that tends to expose the indisputable fact that the problem is not gun ownership but the reason/motive for gun ownership which is quite difficult to establish.
However, I find part of his argument quite arbitrary and devoid of fact especially when he invokes statistical evidence without clearly stating the sources. For instance when he says: “According to statistics compiled from 100 fairly recent gun incidents, when the shooter continues until law enforcement arrives, an average of 14.29 people is killed. When an armed civilian is present, an average of 2.33 civilians are killed, a huge difference.”
Discussion of 2nd article:
(Negatives of gun control, by Jacob Garrison of Pleasant Hill, Ill.)Here the author begins by presenting a brief yet sensible historical orientation of the constitutional right to ownership of firearms by the American citizens. He then proceeds to align his argument on the economic impact of the enforcement of the gun control laws, reasoning that the move would assault the economy by undermining the gun manufacturing firms as well as arms dealers. I second this argument adding that this will also result in both direct and indirect unemployment
However just like Storm Paglia, Mr. Jacob Garrison has used arbitrary statistical support to his argument vaguely stating a study we cannot verify. I also find his conclusion: “There are always pros and cons with anything. Living in an imperfect world, the cons can never be eliminated. In the case of gun control, restricting guns won’t be able to eliminate the cons of guns. It will only eliminate the pros.” Quite vague.Discussion of 3rd article:
(Article from http://westnet.com/~levins/guncontrol3.html)
Here the author begins by discrediting the contribution of law enforcement agencies in dealing with gun related cases. He alludes that there are laws already for addressing our concerns for instance children are barred by the law from owning guns and parents from leaving loaded guns within the reach of children. He has then gone ahead to dispute the need for licensing of a gun the same way a car is licensed giving an array of contrasts between the possession of a car an possession of a gun. To further support his argument, he gives an array of examples of countries that have enacted gun control and his perceived consequences.
This argument is logical in my judgment though I reserve that the examples given at the end of the article about gun control in various countries and their perceive consequences are far – fetched and highly inaccurate. They seem quite radical and not so well thought of. Take for instance when he says: “Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.” This is an erroneous statement as it cannot be verified.
Discussion of 4th article:
(What Gun Owners Really Want I’ve owned six guns. I’ve drawn them on bad guys. I want to be understood, by WALTER KIRN)
Walter, from his article in his argument is in favor of the gun control laws, while appreciating the importance of personal safety. He begins by narrating a childhood ordeal he encountered with his family in which he had initially thought his inherited shotgun would help only to discover the following day that the law doesn’t actually sleep. He further acknowledges that while his fellow gun owners may not agree with him, the gains of accepting the legislation cannot be underestimated. He therefore implore that they accept the passage of the law.
My Argument Concerning Gun Control and Gun Control Laws:
A weapon can be obtained from anything;
In every killing incident, the villain is not the weapon but the perpetrator of act. It therefore implies that anything can be use ranging from pencils to ropes to commit murder, for instance there was once an outcry in land over increased cases of murder among teens in the United Kingdom as a result of teens stubbing fellow teens. The solution could never be banning teens or even other citizens from procuring pen-knives.
Criminals do not care about laws
Now that the main target is supposed to be removing the guns out of the hands of the bad people, it is also worth acknowledging that these bad guys have no business obeying the law because they exist to break them. Therefore outlawing guns doesn’t stop they will simply acquire others illegally. For instance, how many Americans obtain marijuana illegally only to tell the authorities that they use them for medical purposes?
Refuting paragraph
They say there is need to change legislation to ban military-style assault weapons and high capacity magazines, expand background checks, and toughen gun-trafficking laws. But I contest this argument with the reason that it is the hand on the gun and the motive and not the gun that kills.
Conclusion
Having seen several pros and cons of gun control laws, certain questions arise, e.g. are guns our problem? Is the proposed monopoly of weapons the way forward? How do we control crime related crime in a system with democracy of weapons?

Cristina-Carlos Company
Professor Jozsi ACC 3211 Spreadsheet Assignment: Capital Budgeting Fall 2022
In accordance with Florida Southern College’s Honor Code, I attest that the work for this assignment is strictly my own without assistance from anyone.
Name: ________________________ Signature:________________________
Due date: November 18, 2022
Cristina-Carlos Company manufactures various health products. The company is contemplating continuing to make the product with a new machine or buying the finished product from an outside vendor. Expected volume of sales is:
2023: 26,000
2024: 28,000
2025: 33,000
2026: 31,000
2027: 29,000
The machine used to manufacture the products is 100% depreciated. It must be replaced on 12/31/22 if the company wishes to continue manufacturing the product and could be sold for $11,800 on 12/31/22. The company could place into service a new machine on January 2, 2023 with cost $314,000 and terms of 2/10, n/30, freight of $6,300, and installation costs of $10,700. The new machine, with a 5-year economic life, 3-year recovery period under MACRS, and expected salvage value of $19,000 at the end of 2027, would be more efficient than the old machine, resulting in 15% reductions in materials, 10% reduction in labor, as well as a one-time decrease in working capital of $5,500. The working-capital benefit would apply upon equipment acquisition and cease at the end of 2027.
A supplier has quoted a price of $13 per finished unit, which is $2 less than the current full product cost. Current unit product costs are: direct materials $4.50; direct labor $5.50; variable overhead $1; fixed overhead $4. The $4 plant-wide fixed overhead rate applied to each unit is based on practical capacity of 32,000 units. Purchasing the units from an outside supplier would save $17,300 in annual avoidable fixed costs. There would be no other changes, except depreciation on the new equipment. The expected sales price per unit is $23 for 2023 through 2026 and $21 in 2027.
The income tax rate is 21%. Assume annual cash flows and tax payments are at year-end. Cost of capital is 8.7%.
Required: Using Excel, perform the analyses described in Part I (A, B, C), Part II, Part III, and Part IV below.
Set up an input area to place all of the information:
full cost of the new machine (including discount, freight, and installation)
tax rate
cost of capital
direct materials, direct labor, variable overhead (and, projected savings for each product cost)
fixed cost expected savings
salvage values for both old and new machines
depreciation rates
annual volume of units
working capital difference
The goal of the analysis is that changes in data entered in the input area change the spreadsheet values automatically. Since the company is facing mutually exclusive options (continuing to make the product with a new machine versus buying the product from the outside vendor), the two options should be netted.
Provide results screen and formulae for each part. Clearly label results, formulae pages, and your name. You must also provide your signature attesting that you preformed the assignment without assistance from others. Failure to provide the ethical confirmation will result in 0 points awarded for the assignment.
Part I:
Using the information presented, calculate the NPV of the estimated after-tax cash flows at 12/31/22 for this “make or buy” decision. Identify which alternative is better. Suggested format is on the next page as follows:
Dates Machine Cost Salvage Value Tax Effect Gain/Loss Product Cost Difference Fixed Cost Decrease Depreciation Shield Working Capital Annual Cash Flows
2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027 Change the cost of capital to 10.1%, the direct materials and direct labor savings to 18%, tax rate to 23%, and the cost of the new machine to $286,500, and terms of1/10, n/30. Calculate NPV for the problem again.
Refer to the original facts. Calculate NPV if expected volume is as follows:
2023: 32,700
2024: 31,300
2025: 32,000
2026: 30,900
2027: 29,500
Part II: Using the original data from Part I A, determine the IRR for the project.
Part III: Using the original data from Part I A, determine the payback for the project.
Part IV: Discuss below what other relevant factors you would consider for this decision. Discuss at least five other relevant factors.

Assimilation
This paper gives a critical comparison of Amy Tan’s Two Kids and Gish Jen’s Who’s Irish? These are two invaluable novels written by reputable authors to give a detailed analysis of the assimilation process in the highly diversified American society especially in the second half of the 20th centuries. The two books were written by the American authors who are known to have been enjoying a mixed identity as a result of immigration of their parents from their original homelands into the United States of America (USA). Meaning, they share a lot of similarities and differences in their presentations. This can be found in the use of stylistic devices, settings and themes.
As already highlighted, the Two Kids was written by Amy Tan. She is an American novelist who was born and raised by her parents of Chinese descent. After being born in the year 1952, Tan was taken to Switzerland by her mother, Daisy. After completing her secondary education here, she proceeded to San Jose State University where she pursued a Bachelors Degree in Linguistics before going to UC Berkeley for her doctoral studies. Just like in this novel, most of her writings are centered on family conflicts especially between the mother and daughter. On the other hand, Who’s Irish? was written by Gish Jens. Jens belongs to the second generation of American-Chinese. Her parents migrated to USA from China in the 1940s slightly before she was born. In 1955, she was born in New York City before relocating to Yonkers and Scarsdale where she grew up. Later, she completed her education at the prestigious Harvard University. As a contemporary American author, Jens has been credited for writing invaluable novels sensitizing readers on the mixed US culture (Mona, N., 2006).
In the Two Kids, Tan brings out a clear theme of conflict. There is a great conflict between Jing-Mei Woo and her mother. They disagree in most of the issues concerning their lives especially Woo’s career. Her mother does not give her freedom to choose the type of profession to pursue. Instead, she often imposes on her certain activities that she believes are suitable for her as her beloved daughter. At the beginning, she urges her to be a child prodigy. She has very high expectations for her because she wants to be made a proud mum of a successful child. This makes her decide to take Woo to a beauty school in order to enable her become a successful actress just like the other role models she had known before. However, this does not work out because she does not leave the college with pleasing results. The narrator says, ‘she came out of the school looking like a Negroid Chinese!’
Despite such a disappointment, her mother never gave up. She was still determined to get the best out of her. Hence, she took Woo to perform a series of tests to gauge her pomading abilities. According to her, she thought that this was a very simple test that Woo would perform without any problem. After all, she used to read about Woo’s age mates who had excelled in such tests. However, never came to be since Woo could not stand on her head. She was also not able to memorize the capital cities of all the countries she was given. Moreover, Woo failed to perform a simple task of predicting the whether of Los Angeles, a very simple task that anyone could do. After realizing such disappointing results in these tests, Woo lost interest and finally stopped making any trial. This was so demoralizing to her mother who later compelled her to playing piano.
In Who’s Irish, Jens presents the theme f conflict in a narrator’s family. There is a very great disagreement between the narrator, grand mother, son, daughter in law, and Sophie. In the first place, the grand mother is portrayed as a very wild old lady. She is so authoritative and imposes conservative ideas on everyone. Because of sharing different world views, she disagrees with most of the opinion of other people in her family. For instance, she conflicts with his daughter Natalia and son in law John over the best way to instill discipline on their children. Whereas the young couple advocate for a friendlier punishment, the granny insists on corporal punishment. Hence, when infuriated by Sophie, she spanks her using a cane. This does not please John who later disagrees with her to decease from such a brutal conduct.
Meanwhile, there is a conflict among Sophie, Narrator, Sinbad’s mother and the grandmother. When Sophie is taken to play at the park, she interacts with a subversive kid who misleads her to disobey her parents. A result, she decides to kick Sinbad’s mother. This forces the Narrator to spank her for his mischievous behavior. However, this is not taken lightly by Sophie who ten decide to hide in the foxhole which had been dug by the grandmother. Because of this, she throws her with dirt. After the Narrator punishing her, both John and Natalia became so infuriated. Instead of commending the narrator for instilling discipline in their daughter, they openly condemn her for bruising their kid (Gerald, P., 2000).
It is important to acknowledge that these novels are giving out a very clear message to the readers. They make us understand the nature of life in a highly dynamic society in which people from different backgrounds are supposed to adapt to the new environment and harmoniously live together. While Tan sensitizes the readers on the dangers of conformity, Jens brings out a more liberal view which enriches the readers’ minds with assimilation process in such situations. Jing-Mei Woo found herself in problems because of the unlimited demands of her mother. Instead of understanding the different abilities of kids, she believes that all children are equal and can perform similar tasks. This is why she was forcing her daughter to perform similar duties she had seen other do. This is typical of a family conflict which may stem from confusion and unplanned adaptation into new cultural practices.
On the other hand, Jen brings a different kind of conflict which is brought by cultural practices. The positions taken by the Narrator, John, Natalia and grand mother portray them as people who represent different cultural ideologies. Narrator is a conservative character. Her disciplinary approaches represent old ideas and are obsolete. They do not apply to the current generation which needs to be nurtured and treated cautiously. On the other hand, John and Natalia represent the current population which believes in liberalism and freedom. This is typical of the contemporary American society which is characterized by freedom, democracy and plurality. Lastly, the Grand mother is brought up as a dynamic character that belongs to the conservative and liberal groups. She is not so rigid in her ideologies. Hence, she plays a role of an intermediary who connects the old ways to the modern ones (Branda-Williams, N., 2009).
Conclusively, I would like to agree that Who’s Irish and Two Kids are invaluable novels. They were written by renowned authorities who have sensitized the readers on different aspects of assimilation. Despite their differences, we can use them to learn that it is good to be dynamic individuals who can cope up with life in any kind of the environment. If we learn to be flexible, we can exist in a harmony without being at a logger horns with any of us.
