SPED 7206: Special Education Law
Course Project Overview
The big idea: The purpose of this assignment is to encourage deeper investigation of policy, research,
and/or resources to support special education professional practice. Students should develop a deep
understanding of at least one subject within the practice of special education.
*Students can select from the following topics.
A. Topic Selection:
The general topic for each project should relate to policy/law and daily practice of special education.
Students can choose one topic from the following topics:

B. Final Product:
Each course project (final product) will require referenced citations. An APA formatted reference page (works cited) is required. You are encouraged to explore new media formats.
Students can submit the following as a final product:
• Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation (The number of slides should support a 15-minute presentation)

ARGUMENT PAPER GUIDELINES:
Compose an essay defending a claim with appeals to logic, emotion, and imagination. Your paper
should observe the following guidelines: 5-6 pages, MLA style, 5-8 sources, and include a Works Cited
Page. Works cited page does not count as a page. So 5 pages of information. Remember, your thesis must make a strong and specific claim. You should include solid
reasoning, evidence from outside sources, colorful examples to engage the imagination, and promote
credibility through a balanced approach and command of your subject.
CLASSICAL ARGUMENT PAPER TEMPLATE
INTRODUCTION: This section should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs presenting an engaging
description, story, bit of humor, provocative statement, question, or quote. Inspire curiosity, intrigue,
or outrage. Your introduction should make your reader thirst for more. Present your claim last—once
you’ve intrigued your reader. Your claim makes an assertion of opinion on a controversy of some kind,
and should be specific yet elegantly stated.

Reveal the deep significance of your subject and implications for the future. Be inventive with your
conclusion. Your last paragraph should resonate. (1 paragraph)

Choose one of the two options below and pay particular attention to any discussion relating to the macroeconomics concepts addressed in the current unit. After listening or reading, answer the following questions:
What important new things did you learn?
Did the topics discussed in the article or podcast relate to your personal experience in any way? If so, how? If not, how do you believe it could?
How does this new knowledge relate to unemployment, inflation, or other macroeconomic measurements that are being explored in this unit and how they impact the entire economy?
Based on what you learned, what action(s), if any, do you think the government, or society, should take?
Option 1: Podcast
Choose any podcast related to the macroeconomics concepts addressed in the current unit, then choose a specific current episode of that podcast. Examples of acceptable economic-oriented podcasts include:

NPR’s Planet Money
Bloomberg’s Stephanomics
The New Economics Foundation’s Weekly Economics
If you are unfamiliar with podcasts, use any of the above options or just search for economics podcasts. You may also use TED Talks about economic issues.
Option 2: Magazine or Newspaper Article
Using the Library’s Publication Finder, search for a magazine or newspaper that publishes economic-related content. Select a current article related to at least one of the macroeconomics concepts addressed in the current unit.
Examples of magazines and newspapers publishing economic-related content include:

Harvard Business Review
New York Times
Wall Street Journal
You must follow the following criteria for your research:
Explain how your search terms were refined.
Identify your choice of databases (for example: EBSCO or ProQuest ABI/Inform).
Identify the range of dates used.
Identify the experts.
Identify how you sorted the relevant topics.
Write a summary of the article(s), answering the following questions:
Why are financial markets essential for a healthy economy and economic growth?
What are financial institutions?
Describe each and give an example of who may use them:

Financial services corporations
Pension funds
Mutual funds
