Below you will find descriptions for four tasks. The purpose of each is to analyze elements of media
effects we have studied in class. In your responses, be sure that you are using course concepts—for
example: lenses, frames, tone, agenda setting, priming, persuasion. A central purpose of the assignment is
to apply these concepts and demonstrate your familiarity with them. Students should also be referring to
our course readings on media effects (Barbour and Wright, Jamieson and Waldman, and Iyengar,
especially). Answer the questions in a separate document you create, labeling your responses 1a, 1b, etc.
Using 12-point font, double spacing, and 1-inch margins, your full assessment should be around three-tofour
pages in length. Turn your paper in to Canvas Assignments by Friday, October 14 at 11:59 p.m.
1. Front Page Analysis (25 points)
Consider the four front pages included in Newspaper Bias Assessment Images files folder (available in
Canvas/Files/Course Documents). These three front pages were published on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
a) Read the language in the headlines for the front-page reports from each newspaper. Describe
examples of any “loaded” phrases, or biased language. (10 points)
b) Discuss one example of framing you see from each newspaper (in other words, select one
report from each and discuss how it frames the report). (10 points)
c) Are there any common report topics in the three newspapers’ headlines/coverage? Discuss
how this relates to agenda setting. (5 points)

Provide a complete assessment of the company you are currently working for using the assessment tools from this course, which should also have been discussed in your Interim Assessment paper (McKinsey 7-S framework, Balanced Scorecard, SWOT Analysis, PESTLE, etc.). If you were the CEO, what would you change and why? Please provide your recommendations for change, and “Before” and “After” Organizational charts showing the current management structure and how you propose to change it and why.
This Final Assessment should be written as an essay and be 4000 words (+ or – 10%), and should demonstrate skills of critical reflection, effective communication and balanced judgement. Scripts that are excessively long (i.e. exceeding the page limit) will not be read beyond the point of the page limit; there is no minimum page limit. Do not put your name on the paper. A reference List is mandatory, using the Harvard Style.
The overall structure should be as follows:

Assignment task
This task is inspired by the assumption that your ability to handle conflict competently
complements other effective leadership traits such as the ability to motivate people,
emotional intelligence and being visionary. It focuses on managing conflict through
effective negotiation. It is undertaken in two parts: Part A & Part B. You will be given a
further details of this coursework in Week 5.
a. Part A: Case analysis (20%, 1500 words) Week 8
Part A is split into two. It should be undertaken from these two perspectives:
• The new Project Manager; and
• As someone acting on behalf of a sub-contractor.
As the new Project Manager (or a Senior Manager) you are in charge of a complex
project that is going badly. You will analyse the rift between some of the project
stakeholders by using the literature on the emergence and management of conflict.
You will then produce a suitable output which outlines how you are planning to
overcome this rift. Further details of the output will be issued with the coursework
brief.
As someone acting on behalf of a sub-contractor, you need to establish whether the
sub-contractor has any legal basis for claiming that they should be paid the
outstanding sum.
b. Part B: 3,000-word conflict management strategy (60%, 3000 words) Week 12
Part B should be undertaken from the perspective of the Client’s new Project
Manager ONLY. You will devise a strategy for conflict minimisation/resolution. You
are expected to have identified the common causes of conflict in the case project in
Part A. Part B focusses on developing strategies to resolve this conflict, and
reporting this strategy using principles of effective communication.
