Solitary Confinement/ Punitive Segregation
Solitary Confinement/ Punitive Segregation
Should solitary confinement be eliminated within jails and prisons? What are the pros and cons
of solitary confinement? The discussion should include, but not be limited to, security concerns,
short and long-term effects on inmate’s physical and mental health, case studies, empirical data
and safety issues for inmates and staff. You are to conduct independent research. Your research
may include comparisons with other agencies nationwide and worldwide. What if anything could
be implemented to replace solitary confinement? What are the effects of solitary confinement on
inmates with special needs, ie, elderly inmates, pregnant women, inmates with disabilities,
teenagers, mentally ill or physically ill, et al. Can you effectively keep staff and inmates safe
without solitary confinement? Does solitary confinement violate the 8th Amendment which
prohibits “cruel and unusual” punishment? You must cite relevant Supreme Court Case Law.
Must be 2500 words (10 pages) double spaced utilizing a 12-point Times New Roman font,
submitted to “Turn It In. Grammatical errors will lower your grade, proofread your writing. You are
to use Peer Reviewed Journals, case law, news articles, and similar publications as the basis of
your response. Do not cite Wikipedia. Citations should be documented in the American
Psychological Association (APA) format.
Critique of Quantitative Research Article
Critique of Quantitative Research Article
Assignment Objectives: At the completion of this assignment the student will be able to:
- Synthesize information from nursing research to critique a quantitative research article. The knowledge gained from this assignment will provide the students with a foundation to differentiate different components of research as well as research that can be utilized in evidence-based practice
- Evaluate the credibility of sources of information, including but not limited to databases and Internet resources. (AACN III:4)
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice. (AACN III:2)
Directions:
The students will select a quantitative research study from a peer reviewed nursing journal. All research articles used must be pre-approved by the faculty member 4 weeks prior to the assignment
The following questions should be answered in the critique of the article. A yes or no answer will not be accepted. All questions should be explained.
EVALUATION TOOL
Grade Sheet for Critique of Quantitative Research Article (Assignment 2)
| Critical Element | Points | Points Earned | Comments |
| Introduction
– What is the research problem and is it clearly stated in the paper? – How important is the problem to nursing? – What is the justification for this study? – Are there hypotheses, questions, or objectives stated? – What theoretical or conceptual framework was used for the study? Was it clearly identified or only implied? – How is the framework linked to the research purpose? – How current is the research literature reviewed (consider the publication date of the paper)? – Is the literature review organized logically? – Does the literature review adequately support the need for the study? |
15 | ||
| Methods
-What is the study design? -Does the design fit the purpose of the study? (Explain your answer.) -How is the design linked to the sampling method and statistical analysis? -Describe the sample as stated in the article. Is it adequately and clearly described in the article? -Is the sampling procedure discussed in detail? -What do the authors provide as justification for the size of the sample? -Describe the study protocol (treatment and/or procedures): is it clear and concise? -What instruments are described in the article? -Does each instrument measure the concept it is intended to measure? (Is the concept definition consistent with the Operational definition?) Methods (Cont’d) -Does the author(s) present information on reliability and validity of the instruments? -How does the author address threats to internal and external validity that are inherent in the study design? -What evidence is provided regarding human subject’s review and approval discussed? -Are there indications of any ethical concerns? -Is the study described with enough detail for replication? |
20 | ||
| Results
-How are characteristics of the sample described? -Are the research questions/hypotheses answered separately? -What types of data were collected? -What data analysis procedures are used to answer the research questions? (Explain your answer.) -Are tables, charts, and/or graphs used to present the data? -Does the text supplement or repeat the data in the tables? -Briefly summarize the findings and analyze the results. |
20 | ||
| Discussion/Implications for practice
-Does the author relate the findings to the study’s purpose (or research objectives/hypotheses/questions)? -How do the findings of the study compare with findings from previous studies? -Does the author discuss the findings that conflict with previous work? -What limitations of the study are discussed in terms of practice and future research? -What new research emerged from this study? -What is the potential for use in nursing practice? |

| Overall Presentation and final summary
Does the title accurately describe the type of study, major variables, and target population? Does the abstract accurately represent the study? Is the report logically consistent? Is the writing style clear and concise? |

**This assignment is a component of this program’s “Outcome Assessment Plan” which evaluates the student’s critical thinking. Students who receive less than 77% will be required to modify their paper or re-present their oral presentation until a passing grade has been reached. The student’s original grade will be the only grade counted towards the final grade
Prostate or Breast Cancer
Instructions
Requirements:
This paper should clearly and comprehensively identify the chronic health disease chosen.
Select a topic from the following list (topics rotate):
Polycythemia Vera
Alcohol Addiction
Prostate or Breast Cancer
Epilepsy/Seizure Disorders
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (Select childhood or adulthood for the OCD topic)
The paper should be organized into the following sections:
Introduction (Identification of the problem) with a clear presentation of the problem as well as the significance and a scholarly overview of the paper’s content. No heading is used for the
Introduction per APA current edition.
Background and Significance of the disease, to include: Definition, description, signs and
symptoms, and current incidence and/or prevalence statistics by state with a comparison to
national statistics pertaining to the disease. Create a table of incidence or prevalence rates by
your geographic county/city or state with a comparison to national statistics. Use the APA text for
formatting guidelines (tables). This is a table that you create using relevant data, it should not be
a table from another source using copy/paste.
Surveillance and Reporting: Current surveillance methods and mandated reporting processes as
related to the chronic health condition chosen should be specific.
Epidemiological Analysis: Conduct a descriptive epidemiology analysis of the health condition.
Be sure to include all of the 5 W’s: What, Who, Where, When, Why. Use details associated with
all of the W’s, such as the “Who” which should include an analysis of the determinants of health.
Include costs (both financial and social) associated with the disease or problem.
Screening and Guidelines: Review how the disease is diagnosed and current national standards
(guidelines). Pick one screening test (review Week 2 Discussion Board) and review its sensitivity,
specificity, predictive value, and cost.
Plan: Integrating evidence, provide a plan of how a nurse practitioner will address this chronic
health condition after graduation. Provide three specific interventions that are based on the
evidence and include how you will measure outcomes (how will you know that the interventions have utility, are useful?) Note: Consider primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions as well as
the integration of health policy advocacy efforts. All interventions should be based on evidence –
connected to a resource such as a scholarly piece of research.
Summary/Conclusion: Conclude in a clear manner with a brief overview of the keys points from
each section of the paper utilizing integration of resources.
The paper should be formatted and organized into the following sections which focus on the
chosen chronic health condition.
Adhere to all paper preparation guidelines (see below).
Preparing the Paper:
Page length: 7-10 pages, excluding title page and references.
APA format current edition
Include scholarly in-text references throughout and a reference list.
Include at least one table that the student creates to present information. Please refer to the
“Requirements” or rubric for further details. APA formatting required.
Length: Papers not adhering to the page length may be subject to either (but not both) of the
following at the discretion of the course faculty: 1. Your paper may be returned to you for editing
to meet the length guidelines, or, 2. Your faculty may deduct up to five (5) points from the final
grade.
Adhere to the Chamberlain College of Nursing academic policy on integrity as it pertains to the
submission of original work for assignments.
