Depression Among Young Adults in Prison in the UK

Depression Among Young Adults in Prison in the UK

Size or length of assessment 2000-2500 words

As you are given a word count range, the 10% over or under the word count rule DOES NOT apply.

Note that reference lists, appendices, contents page and title page do not count in the word limit.

Unit learning outcomes 1. Demonstrate the following knowledge and understanding

of the main theoretical approaches to understanding the nature, prevalence and impact of mental illness.

2.  Demonstrate the following skills and abilities

Critically analyse the evidence for how the experience of, and interventions for, a specific mental illness impact on those who are affected by it.

What am I required to do in this assignment?
The assignment will take the form of a 2000-2500 word report, which identifies a specific mental health issue, or condition, and presents a comprehensive account of how this affects a chosen social group in the UK. The report contents must also include a critical account of services and support mechanisms involved in the process of supporting the recovery of individuals by meeting their diverse needs.  To ensure early engagement with the task, you will need to submit your full reference list and report topic in week 8 (Monday 20th April , by 10 am). The reference list must contain a range of sources you aim to use including both qualitative and quantitative research papers related to your chosen topic that you will use in the final report. There will be no grade associated with this element but it is a compulsorily element of the task and the report will not be graded if this element is not completed.

You will be expected to use a range of quantitative data to establish the prevalence of your chosen condition in the UK – here you would give statistics related to areas such as how many of your chosen social group have your chosen mental health problem in the UK.

You must also use qualitative data to describe the lives of those affected by your chosen illness or disorder and how they view treatment and support services. For the qualitative data, you should draw on primary research studies where service users and/or families/carers speak about their experiences i.e. you must use primary research studies that give ‘voice’ to your chosen social group. These are studies that look at what your social group have to say life is like for them living with the mental health problem and the impact the mental illness has on them and their life as well as what they say about the support/mental health services they receive in the UK.

Finally, you must critically evaluate the services/support received by your chosen group. You need to say whether or not, based on the evidence, these mental health services/support in the UK are working to assist/help your chosen and whether all with your chosen condition have equal access to services. Here you can also draw on studies where those with mental illnesses speak about the support they receive and whether it is enough/meets their needs.

The final report must include a full reference list of texts and sources cited in the main body. All referencing in the text and reference list must follow the Harvard style, as specified in the Faculty’s Harvard referencing guidelines, which you will find on the Unit’s BREO site under the ‘Assessment’ section.   Please remember you only ever list primary sources in your reference list – Please look up secondary referencing in the Faculty’s Harvard referencing guidelines.

To pass the assignment, there is an expectation that you will draw on a range of both academic sources including peer-reviewed primary research papers, academic books and academic journal articles and other appropriate sources.

Proofread and edit your work before handing it in.

The report format should be as follows:

1.      Title page (you must provide your own title)

2.      Abstract or Executive Summary (on a separate page)

3.      Table of contents (which includes page numbers for the different sections/subsections and should be on a new page)

4.      Introduction

5.      Discussion of findings (should consist of different headed sections/subsections; subheading titles should also appear in your table of contents)

6.      Conclusion

7.      References

8.      Appendix/Appendices. Appendices should be given titles and these should be included in your Table of Contents. (Note you do not have to use appendices.)

You are reminded that plagiarism of any type will be penalised and result in a fail.

What do I need to do to pass? (Threshold Expectations from UIF)
In order to pass the assessment, you will need to:

•        Provide evidence of understanding of the diversity of mental health service users, and demonstrate the ability to interpret evidence, and to recognise the occasional ambiguity of evidence.

•        Identify and critically evaluate policies, treatments and services that diagnose, treat and support people living with mental illness.

•        Explore the validity of prevailing approaches and the ways in which patients and service users respond to them.

•        Utilise a range of mixed methods to establish patterns and to understand experiences of those affected by your chosen illness or disorder.

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?
Carry out wider reading of peer-reviewed journals drawing on appropriate UK based qualitative and quantitative studies and adopt an appropriate critical approach to your analysis and evaluation of mental health services, treatment and support in the UK, considering the diverse needs of different groups/individuals. Reference accurately and systematically throughout your work using the correct Harvard format. Write in clear, accurate and succinct academic English.
How does this assignment relate to what we are doing in scheduled sessions?
It links to the issues discussed in the weekly lectures and helps you develop an in-depth understanding of how the needs of mental health service users are met in the UK from the service users’ perspective.

Risk Assessment- Occupational Health and Safety

Risk Assessment- Occupational Health and Safety

SCENARIO: Hydrazine is an inorganic compound which is dangerously unstable and
carcinogenic. It is probably toxic as well, but some chronic exposure parameters are uncertain at
this time. Hydrazine is used in preparing polymer foams, rocket fuels, fighter aircraft fuels, and in
the reaction that rapidly inflates vehicle air bags.
You are asked to carry out a risk assessment in two parts:

(1) An explosion scenario at the facility
which addresses the short term exposure of nearby residents to hydrazine in their water supply for a
limited period of time; and

(2) Chronic exposure of nearby residents through the water supply on
an on-going basis as a result of leakage from the plant. Years later, a risk assessment of various
chemicals in the food and water is being performed. Provide the assessment for the combined risk
using the excel sheet (3).

Part 1: Resident carcinogen scenario following explosion at the plant resulting in hydrazine
contamination of the aquifer used for drinking water
Hydrazine dissipates in air within hours, but it can reach the water supply and is thought to remain
there for up to 40 days, presenting a risk for persons drinking well-water containing hydrazine.
The initial (highest) concentration in water at day 1 is 600μg/L, with the concentration reaching
undetectable limits by day 40. Assume constant rate-of-dissipation, so calculate the exposure
assessment as a mean concentration of 300μg/L for the full 40-day exposure. Also assume
contact rate of 2L/d, body weight of 70kg, absorbance and relative retention of 1.0. Show all work
including units.
(a) Given that an explosion has taken place, calculate the expected lifetime incremental risk of
death from cancer per person exposed as specified above for these 40 days.
(b) Given that an explosion has taken place, calculate the hypothetical number of additional
deaths from cancer due to this cause among 50,000 residents exposed through drinking water.

Part 2: Resident carcinogen scenario from continued low-level hydrazine contamination of
the aquifer used for drinking water through leakage. Assume that the continuous leakage of
hydrazine into the ground water from the plant for 12 years results in a constant
concentration in the aquifer of 10.0 µg/L.
(a) What would be the lifetime risk of cancer death for the residents from this exposure
scenario, assuming the parameters
(b) How many people would die from this exposure if the population were 50,000?
(c) Advise this population about how to reduce their intake to acceptable levels if the risk was
147 times more than the de minimis level (note: There is more than a single answer – only
provide one).
Part 3: Years later, soil and water samples are taken and a combined risk assessment is
performed for various chemicals (Note: bioconcentration factor provided in excel sheet to
convert soil values to food values). Using the given excel sheet, answer the following questions:
(a) What is the combined HI and cancer risk to the community from these new chemicals?
(b) Removing the most hazardous combined carcinogenic compounds first, list the chemicals
need to be removed to bring the values to acceptable values?
(c) Removing the most hazardous non-carcinogenic chemicals first, which ones need to be
removed to bring the values to acceptable values?

Community Problem Strategy

Community Problem Strategy

Part 1: On your own, or with a partner(s), your task will be to explore and address a common social problem that often leads to crime, antisocial behaviour, or unsafe communities within a city near you.  It is very important that you choose a specific city and explore a problem in that particular community.  A prime example of a community problem that is very prominent today relates to the opioid crisis which includes, but is not limited to, needle exchange, needle disposal, and safe injection/consumption sites.  It could also be another common social problem, such as homelessness.

It is also very important that you explore the nature and extent of the social problem you choose from at least four unique and specific stakeholder perspectives that you feel are most important to consider in whatever strategy created. Each of these stakeholders will have different priorities and roles within the solution and it is important to identify them.  Examples of important stakeholders are:

  1. The client population (ex. drug addicted, homeless, etc.)
  2. The police (Chief, community police officers, etc.)
  3. The municipal government (ex. politicians, mayor, city councilors, etc.)
  4. Health Care providers (ex. EMT, ER, hospital administrators, etc.)
  5. Local business owners
  6. Concerned citizens (neighbourhood, residents, voters, etc.)
  7. Service providers (ex. Not-for-Profit organizations, shelters, mental health, etc.)
  8. Educators (elementary schools, high schools, researchers, counselors, etc.)

Part 2: You will develop a crime prevention strategy with short, medium, and long term goals that might be used to address the social problem you chose.  Although prevention should be your ultimate objective (address the root causes of the behaviour), there may also be enforcement and intervention tactics being used.  One of the most important elements is that you consider and respect all stakeholders’ perspectives and identify strategic partnerships and proactive initiatives that might be undertaken to make a safer and/or healthier community.   You are expected to use an evidence-based approach to this exercise (explore what works in other cities and countries around the world) and to reflect this research using proper APA formatting rules.

Your strategy document (word format) must include the following:

  1. A) A general description of the nature and extent of the problem (minimum 250 words)
  2. B) An analysis of the problem from at least four unique stakeholders perspectives.   How does this problem affect them and the work they do? How does it affect their day-to-day activities or that of the clients they serve? (approximately 250 words per stakeholder)
  3. C) A suggested prevention strategy.  (approx. 250 – 500 words)

This does not have to be in formal essay format, although complete sentences, proper punctuation, grammar, and readability is important.  Feel free to use bullets where appropriate.  Proper APA format, including title page and reference page is expected.
