Community Event Reflection Essay Writing

This assignment requires you to find and participate in a macro social work–oriented event either online or in person. Please contact me if you need help finding an event in your community that works with your schedule or is accessible for online participation.

The event could be

a community group meeting,
meeting of elected officials,
forum,
panel,
lecture,
rally, or
anything where people are coming together in an organized manner around a social issue.
Fundraisers for non-profits will not qualify for this assignment.

 

After the event
Write a reflection answering the following questions in 3–4 pages. Review the rubric, it is provided to help you understand the expectations for the assignment.

Use the following questions to organize your reflection; including a heading for each question:

What was the event? (title, date, time, location or online platform)
Who was the event’s target macro client, defined by population, problem, and arena?
What were the perceived goals of the event? Do you think the event accomplished its goals?
Discuss participation in the event. Was the event attended or organized by the target macro population? Were there power dynamics evident between the organizers, participants, and macro population (if members of that group were not in attendance)?
What assets were evident at the event that might be leveraged in support of the macro client?
Describe how the event fits into one of the community practice models.
What was the main takeaway relevant to macro practice?

I’ll get us started — check your local city government for community meetings such as city council, planning boards, etc. Many of these are broadcast online! You may watch a pre-recorded meeting if it is recent (within the past 60 days). Check UK and other universities and colleges! Look at NASW Chapters for events and ideas! Use the Community Event Ideas (assignment due Module 5) to share ideas!
