Purpose

Conducting needs-based assessments will be an important aspect of the DNP practice scholar. The purpose of this assignment is to gain insight into the steps of this process.

You will be developing and implementing a DNP Practice Project in Practicum. This first Assignment will begin the assessment and framework of your DNP project. Using this assessment and framework you will continue to develop and plan your project for the second Assignment

In order to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement, you will complete an interview with key organizational leaders and stakeholders to identify internal and external factors. In addition, a SWOT analysis will be conducted to determine gaps or opportunities for improvement.

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

CO1: Examine the role of the DNP-prepared nurse in leading financial planning and management across healthcare settings (PO 2, 4, 9).

CO2: Formulate a needs-based organizational assessment to inform strategic leadership decision-making (PO 3, 5, 7).

CO3: Develop strategies to lead project planning, implementation, management, and evaluation to promote high value healthcare (PO 3, 5, 7).

Preparing the Assignment

  1. Complete an interview with organizational leaders and key stakeholders to identify what is working well and what potential gaps exist. The FAME approach can be used to evaluate feasibility, appropriateness, meaningfulness, and effectiveness of a project.
  2. Conduct a SWOT analysis of the organization where you will be conducting your project.
  3. Create your manuscript using Microsoft Word 2010 (a part of Microsoft Office 2010) or later version, which is the required format for all Chamberlain University College of Nursing documents. You can tell that the document is saved as a MS Word 2010 document because it will end in “.docx”.
  4. Review the Graduate Re-Purpose Policy in the Student Handbook.  Repurposed Work ( University Graduate Programs only): Graduate students have the opportunity to use previously submitted ideas as a foundation for future courses. No more than 50 percent of an assignment, excluding references, may be repurposed from another  University course (excluding practicum courses). Previous course assignments that are deemed building blocks will be notated in the syllabus by the course leader. As with every assignment, students must uphold academic integrity; therefore, students must follow the guidelines for remaining academically honest according to the Academic Integrity policy. If the instructor is not made aware of the repurposing of an assignment, the submission will be treated as plagiarized work if not properly referenced
  5. Follow the directions and grading criteria closely. Any questions about this paper may be posted under the Q & A Forum.
  6. The paper (excluding the title page and references page) should be six to 10 pages. Points will be lost for not meeting the length requirement.
  7. Font type and sizes acceptable: 12-point Times New Roman or 11-point Ariel.
  8. Use the following subheadings to organize the content of your paper.
    1. Identification of the Problem or Need
      1. Discuss how the need was determined including a brief summary of the SWOT analysis.
      2. Share how the identified need and vision, mission and objectives for the project align with the mission and overall goals of the organization.

    1. Excellent discussion of resources to address the problem or need.
    2. Includes processes, people, finance, and means pertinent to the chosen problem or need.
  • Discusses any issues that still need to be developed with resources and project planning.
  1. Identification of Relevant Data, Collection, and Analysis
    1. Identify the specific data relevant to the problem or need and determine how best to collect the same in order to allow analysis and manipulation to determine potential resolutions.
    2. Discuss data collection, including instrument used and explanation of why it is relevant to the project.
  • Discuss the reliability and validity statistics of the instrument and provide an example from the literature where it has been used in a similar project.
  1. Explicate how the data will be analyzed to clarify the parameters of the issue addressed, potential solutions, and possible bias inherent in the instrument.
  1. Stakeholder Buy-In
    1. Identification of key stakeholders; including those who will support change and those who may resist change.
    2. Identify who will have the most influence on positive or negative changes related to your identified problem.

    1. Provide a well-rounded and comprehensive conclusion.
    2. Summarize the entire assessment.

  1. Clarity of Writing
    1. Use of standard English grammar and sentence structure. No spelling errors or typographical errors. Organized around the required components using appropriate headers.
  2. All information taken from another source, even if summarized, must be appropriately cited in the manuscript and listed in the references using APA (6th ed.) format.

    3. Citations in the text and references
  3. A minimum of five scholarly references must be used. Scholarly references need to be current, 5-years or less (anonymous authors or web pages are not acceptable).
  4. The title page, body of the paper, and reference page must follow APA guidelines as found in the sixth edition of the manual; this includes the use of headings for each section or topic of the paper.
  5. Ideas and information that come from readings must be cited and referenced correctly.
  6. Rules of grammar, spelling, word usage, and punctuation are followed and consistent with formal written work as found in the sixth edition of the APA manual.
  7. This paper will be graded on quality of topic, quality of paper information, use of citations, grammar, and sentence structure.

CLARIFICATION OF ASSIGNMENT

Please review the Guideline and Rubric for this Week 3 Assignment and include these revisions for clarification:

The intent is to give you the tools and skills to plan and manage a practice change project, whether it would be your DNP project or a practice change project for a future implementation.

If there are any areas of your project planning that you are still developing, please discuss what is needed for your planning and how you will plan for this.

  1. If you have not had an interview, or are working on the virtual option, please discuss why having an interview with the facility is an important part of project planning. Who would you interview? What would you discuss in the interview?
  2. Discuss the practice problem and the significance to nursing practice and health care,either the one you have been working on or the one for your virtual option.
  3. Discuss your SWOT analysis and the importance to your project plans.  How can thisinfluence the success or delay of the project plans?
  4. Discuss the proposed practice change intervention and the evidence to support the practice change.  If you are working on the virtual option, discuss your virtual option proposed practice change.
  5. Discuss the resources you will need to plan for to make  the practice change.  if you are doing the virtual option,  discuss what resources you might need if you were to implement such a project.
  6. Discuss what data you would collect for your evaluation of the practice change and why.  Will

you use a tool or collect patient data? How will you collect the data? What type of statistical analysis might your do?

If you are doing the virtual option, discuss from the literature what others might have done to  evaluate a similar project.
