CURRENT ETHICAL ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE

CURRENT ETHICAL ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE

Ethics and honesty in the work place are everyone’s concerns, ethics involve ones moral obligation involving right and wrong. Currently in the work place there are ethical issues occur in daily activities of an organization, these issues have remedies to them, because they need to be resolved for smooth operations in an organization.

Sexual harassment- this is an ethical issue which has been in the work place and has risen lately. This in the past was mainly affecting women, where they were assaulted sexually, either through rape or exchange of sex for managerial favors but currently is also affecting men. Managers have been reported of taking advantage of their staff and using their position of power and influence to sexually harass their staff. This issue is degrading and demoralizing to those who are sexually assaulted, it can lead to reduced productivity in work as the sexually assaulted has lost motivation by being assaulted by the leader (manager) who is supposed to be their source of encouragement and motivation in the organization.

Managers who have been accused of sexually assaulting their staff have defended themselves by saying that the sexually assaulted member deserved the assault, they have also claimed that the act was led by the mode of dressing of the worker thus the worker deserved the assaults, which is not a justified excuse.

Managers and co-workers should never take any action that is not kind or that does not build the work place as a community, also one should not take an action which they wouldn’t wish to be taken on them.

Stealing and theft-stealing of company supplies is a current ethical issue in the work place. Supplies that are meant for company use have a number of times been reported missing yet they were there. Siphoning of fuel from company vehicles and using the fuel in personal cars or reselling the fuel to middlemen has also been affecting the work place. This has been done majorly be the staff in the organization but also some managers have been reported of stealing company supplies for their own use and benefits. Such acts leave an organization to suffer losses as what was budgeted for is not enough and restocking has to be done before the due period.

Workers who have been caught in involvement with stealing from the organization try to defend their actions by saying that they are entitled to indulge in such behavior because of their service to the organization, claiming that the organization owes them for their effort and contribution.

Co-workers should not be involved in activities that are not in the long term interest of the organization that they are in.

Lying on reports/Falsifying records-preparing false reports and doctored records is another ethical issue in the current work place. The presentation of false figures especially of financial information has been happening in the work place, this is done mainly to portray the organization as on which is on an upward trend, one which is making profits. This presents the wrong image of an organization, as it may attract investors who think that they are going to make big profits only to get disappointed by the results. This is done by workers who feel pressurized by top management to achieve results; they change the figures due to pressure. The fear that presenting low results may portray the organization as one which is performing poorly and workers as if they are not working their best and causing the firm to fail.

Workers who doctor records often do so when they feel that there is pressure from above.

Managers need to avoid putting pressure on their workers and know where to draw a line between motivation and undue pressure on their workers.

Alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace-the use of drugs and alcohol in the work-place has risen too; workers have been caught with alcohol and drugs in their work stations. The use of drugs and alcohol in the work place reduces the productivity of workers as it makes a worker work and reason slower than when they are sober.

The use of alcohol and drugs may also be a prime cause of other unethical issues in the work place that may be done by workers who are performing under the influence of drugs. Drug and alcohol users may be prompted to steal from the organization so that they can make extra money to spend on drug and alcohol. Workers using drugs and alcohol are also a potential source of sexual harassment in the work place; they may sexually harass others as their actions are not sober and well considered.

Workers who have been accused of abusing drugs and alcohol in the work place have defended themselves by saying that their actions hurt nobody and that the drugs or alcohol help them work better and focus more on work which is quite a lie; it is no brainer that drugs and alcohol lower a person’s concentration.

Workers should not do actions that are not in the long term interest of the organization.

Pollution-with the current growth rate of industries, pollution is also an ethical issue that is emerging .The poor management of waste by a company hence affecting its surrounding environment negatively. Pollution in form of effluence and noise from industrial organizations are ethical issues that need to be considered. Pollution by the company affects the surrounding community which depends on the environment for better living, water pollution in the rivers and lakes will kill the marine life thus affecting a fishing community that has fishing as their main economic activity.

Lack of proper waste management may be caused by poor leadership which is not concerned about the surrounding environment.

Workers and management should never take actions which violate the law because the law is the minimal moral standards of the society.

Gossip-where workers spend time talking about their co-workers, talk which is aimless and mostly spreading false information. Where workers spend time talking about other workers in the workplace this wastes much time which accounts for production time. Once personal information which at time may be false about someone is spread, this not only wastes time but also demoralizes the person whom the information regards. By demoralizing a worker they will not be able to work efficiently towards the organizations goals.

Workers who engage in gossip do have denied their responsibility by engaging in time wasting behavior, they perceive that they do not have any other choice than listen to whatever their fellow workers are telling them.

Workers should be honest and truthful and should not say information about someone which may lead to the person’s loss of self-esteem as this will affect the workers’ productivity at the work place.

These are the issues which have occurred in recent times at the work place. Such issues should be addressed by the organizations’ top management through establishing guidelines of dealing with the issues. They always affect the organization negatively by waste of time and reducing workers’ productivity. To solve these ethical issues workers and management should

Never take actions that do not reflect the long term goals and objectives of the company.

Always be open, honest and truthful and never take actions that they would not love being reported about them on national tv.

Never commit an action which is not kind and does not build the sense of the organization as a community.

They should also meet all government requirements; never take actions which violate the law as the law represents the moral standards of the society.

Never perform actions which harm the lees fortunate people in any way and should always apply distributive justice.

Should never perform actions which abridge the rights of other people around them.

Should always perform actions which are not for the greater good for the society rather than harm.

Never take actions which you would not like other people to take against you.

When applied by the whole organization, these will help the management in handling the current ethical issues at the work place.

The Theme of Light and Darkness in Oedipus the King

The play, Oedipus the King, was originally written by an ancient Greek playwright Sophocles in 750 BC. It was then translated and edited by Ian Johnson. The play begins with a description of a plague that had struck the Kingdom of Thebes. Oedipus begins looking for solutions to end the epidemic and sends Creon, his brother-in-law, to the oracle for advice on what must be done to save the city. Creon reports that the god revealed that to end the plaque, the killer of Laius, the former King, must be sought and punished. Oedipus puts [word choice: organizes?] up a mission to try to find the murderer, but in the process, he offends and threatens many individuals. He releases a proclamation declaring that he would expel the person responsible for the plaque[sp-plague] from his kingdom. However, in the end, it turns out that the King himself is the assassin. Throughout the play, Sophocles uses light and darkness as the play building block. Sight and blindness are used as allusions to the theme of light and darkness. This theme is used metaphorically and is depicted through two main characters; Teiresias and Oedipus. Sophocles metaphorically uses the theme of light and darkness to symbolize darkness, truth, and ignorance. [Revise for clarity as you repeat ideas. You can combine sentences to avoid repetitions. You have said the same thing at least twice. Express your idea once, strongly, and then move on to the next idea.]

Firstly, although Teiresias is physically blind, he is in light, holds reality on the ground, and sees the truth from the beginning. [Explain what you mean by ‘holds reality on the ground.’ This phrase will confuse the reader.] The light is the truth prophesied by Teiresias concerning the murderer of Laius, the former King. Teiresias knows that Oedipus is the killer being sought. He also knows Oedipus’s parents. In a prophecy, he revealed that the murderer of Laius; “will turn out to be the brother of the children in his house—their father, too, both at once, and the husband and the son of the very woman who gave birth to him” (Sophocles 550-560.18). Teiresias is also aware that Oedipus will lose his sight. Also, although Teiresias is blind, he is considered a symbol of truth. The entire Kingdom of Thebes knew Teiresias as a prophet who consistently foretold the truth. For instance, Teiresias is described by the chorus leader as; “…our god-like prophet, in whom the truth resides more so than in all men” (Sophocles 350-360.12). [As the second reference to this publication, you need not add Sophocles to each in-text citation since there is only one source. If your professor has indicated differently, always follow the professor’s advice.] This sentiment indicates that people in the Kingdom saw Teiresias as a beacon of hope and truth. Thus, it can be concluded that Teiresias’ physical blindness symbolizes light, truth, and knowledge of [the events in the play] what is going on. [‘What is going on’ is too informal. Use more academic language.]

Secondly, although Oedipus has eyesight, he is living in darkness and does not know the truth about himself and his past. Confirming this statement, Teiresias tells Oedipus that; “you have your eyesight, and you do not see how miserable you are, or where you live, or who it is who shares your household” (Sophocles 490-500.16). It is clear that when Oedipus killed Laius, he did not know that he was his father. This was due to a lack of knowledge about his family. He confessed that he had killed a stranger who insulted him. Confirming that he did not know whether he had killed his father, he goes ahead to ask; “If that stranger was somehow linked to Laius, who is now more unfortunate than me? (Sophocles 970-980.33) [Devise a conclusion summing up the important aspects of this paragraph.]

Furthermore, Oedipus is in darkness since he failed to foresee his fate despite the prophet’s warning. When Teiresias attempts to explain his vision to Oedipus, he is rebuffed and accused of banding together with Oedipus’ brother-in-law, Crepon. Here, Oedipus asks him “ is this something Creon has devised, or is it your invention?” (Sophocles 451.15). Oedipus initially rejects the prophet’s claim that he killed his father. He asks Teiresias for the second time what he has said. Teiresias again tells him that he is the man who murdered Laius. Enraged, Oedipus tells him, “That’s twice you’ve stated that disgraceful lie—something you’ll regret” (Sophocles 430-440.15). The fact that he denies the [act?] fact is an indication that he is in darkness. [Repetitious] Also, since Oedipus does not recognize Teiresias’ prophesy is an indication that he was ignorant of the truth that had been presented to him. After Oedipus refuses to embrace the truth (the light), which Teiresias presents to him in the form of a prophecy, in the end, he physically blinds himself ([symbolizing]the darkness) by taking away his eyesight. Oedipus chooses to go blind only because he is astonished that the prophecy came true and that the prophet had warned him about it [Explain what ‘it’ refers to. The event? The prophecy? Future events?] all along. If it were not for ignorance, Oedipus would have acknowledged Teiresias’ prophecy.

The theme of sight and blindness is presented as a metaphor where it symbolizes darkness, truth, and ignorance. Teiresias, who is physically blind, is used to depict light and knowledge. Teiresias holds reality on the ground and is aware of many things, including the King’s murderer and the Oedipus family. [‘Things’ is vague. Use more specific terms.] He also knows that Oedipus will lose his sight. On the other hand, even though Oedipus has eyesight, he lives in darkness and does not know the truth about himself and his past. He is not aware that he killed his father, Laius, and describes him as a stranger. Also, Oedipus is in darkness since, despite the prophet’s warning, he did not foresee his fate. [Good point.] Thus, based on the theme of sight and blindness, it can be inferred that physical blindness does not deter someone from being in the light and knowing what is happening around them.

Introduction. This essay seeks to analyze the role of information technology in the transformation of the contemporary work place and the influences this has had on labour, organizational structures, value production and general workplace culture. The discussion will be guided by the text ‘network culture: Politics for the information age by Terranova, T. (2004). A broad view approach will be applied to try and weigh the authors arguments vis a vis other views by writers and personal experiences.

The author draws on the ‘real subsumption notion of Marxism. This argument claims that the capitalistic regime will eventually be hard pressed to absorb all the labour it produces. The author claims that the phenomena in the digital/new economy whereby internet users become active participants in the development of content and/or software (Terranova, 2004). The argument here is that many difficulties arise from this relationship. While the difficulties may present a problem, under close inspection, this argument collapses in view of Adam Smith’s contention that man is driven by his own desire to better his/her lot and society becomes better as a result (Raphael, 1985). It can thus be argued that the content developing users of the internet are only striving to make the sites better off for them and in the process benefitting all of us. This is a significant improvement in innovativeness that has been brought about by the interconnectivity in the new business environments.

The traditional organization structures are changing. With the emergence of new thoughts and bold maverick entrepreneurs emerging to experiment with new structures and often emerging successful, more and more companies are bond to pick up the trend. Andrew Ross’s study of the ‘silicon valley’ analyzed companies like Razorfish which had open managements and was able to induce over enthusiasm in its workers and increase production (Ross, 1988). These advances redefine management and employer employee relations and have succeeded in making workers feel ownership more than traditional setups. This is a direct rebuttal by the innovative capitalists to its opponents of the sixties who argued that labour in capitalist states was repetitive and dull. With the new age of information technology, one does not even require to have met their boss; a company can outsource certain functions across continents without anybody having left the office. This has resulted in more flexible and stimulating working experiences and the productivity of all parties becomes markedly enhanced.

Influences of the management theory reform movement have informed most of the new economy’s decisions. The emphasis on the value of giving workers more liberty in driving the production process through new management structure has paid off. Decentralized institutions and ones which delegate a lot has proved to be more productive in the long run. Arguably, this draws from the ‘biological turn’ discovery. The argument that it is possible to contain and direct human effort and the creativity of the masses has considerable promise, elective and moderate application of pressure is the means to achieving this. It is highly possible to harness production from workforces without necessarily having the congregated at a particular territory. As such even the office as we know it today is bound to change. With this in mind, it can also be said that the Bionomic view of the economy as a chaotic but self organizing ecology and organizations intelligent and social beings and that the ultimate boost to the bottom line will come from organizational learning. Looking at the internet as an example of this, a lot of truth in the view is evidenced. The internet expands and mutates without the control of any planners, managers, and in essence not a single person in charge. This can be a reference for any company that favors bottom up structures. It is leaderless and more acentered (Terranova, 2004). Companies can thus take the cue and decentralize as much as possible and let their workers lead the process of innovation and production. Technological firms that mostly rely on staff like content developers and minds of physicists who more often than not are the only individuals who clearly visualize what they have in mind have reaped a lot from this approach.

In the emergent interconnectivity in the new economy, opportunity for growth in more interconnected world abounds. Companies that choose to adopt the new economies management models will undoubtedly flourish. Tied to the hip to this new management policy is a need for increased openness with information. The individual in this world has inbred a desire of knowledge. They seek it at all costs and channels for gaining this knowledge are now more available than ever. Modeling company growth on secrecy and public manipulation through misinformation is bound to snow ball on the companies. The socialization of individuals implies that they have been fed enough truths and hold too many opinions and thus have shifted communication from the traditional angle of representation to a tool of strategy and tactics. Thus, information now is not just a representative of the firm but a tool that will shift, touch and command.

The media culture is another aspect that has changed the way firms are to communicate with the masses. The main theme here is that the image firms portray should not just be sociological (Muirhead, 2004). The masses want to be fascinated by what they perceive of the firm, the image will not be looked at in terms of meaning but consumed, i.e. the images go through a process of absorption and are then relayed. This has led to a culture of ‘Perception management’. Public relations departments are now more relevant and firms must seek to have a satisfactory understanding of the conditions in their specific localities and markets (Terranova, 2004).

Clearly, the management in the current world order has their work well cut out for them. They have to not only keep abreast with movement in the markets but also have a clear and concise organization plan that seeks to exploit the human resources at their disposal to the fullest. This means labour relations have to be managed not through the traditional unionism but by assuaging and massaging the perceptions of the staff. The most successful manger is the one who will ensure that his employees do not regard what they do as work but feel near complete ownership of the company processes.
