Evaluation of E-learning and Video Learning in Crime Scene Training

E-learning can be defined as the use of educational electronic technology in teaching and learning that is broadly synonymous with instructional technology, EdTech, learning technology, information and communication technology (ICT), technology enhanced learning, multimedia learning, computer based instructions, computer managed training, computer assisted instruction, internet based training, web based training, online education, among others. All these terms refers to the use of modern tools like digital technology, computers, electronic media, networked digital devices CITATION Ros01 l 1033 (Rosenberg, 2001).

On the other hand, teaching and learning using audiovisual materials provides a rich medium for teaching and learning. It is easy to communicate complex information to every student if used creatively. Audiovisual is a powerful expressive tool. It creates motivating and memorable and exclusive learning experience. Watching video is considered a passive experience and if teaching using audiovisual is to be undertaken keenly, it can lead to a springboard for student action and interaction.

The facilitators of audiovisual teaching and learning are tasked with watching the videos before using them for teaching purposes. This is done to ensure that the contents of material being passed to the students are clean. If in any case there are unnecessary materials or unsuitable contents, it should be removed. Audiovisual aid and teaching techniques have been used successfully in illustrations of specific topics. Videos are used to demonstrate topics succinctly and effectively all over the world. Using video as a teaching tool can help to engage students and it is better to put into consideration that no single delivery will suit all learners. However, the facilitator should consider providing transcripts as well as audio descriptions if the video materials are the core element of the lesson plan. With this all the student will be able to access the materials equally, especially the students that English is not their first language CITATION She05 l 1033 (Sherin, 2005).

The following are what the students should expect in an online Crime Scene training-fingerprint. The course overview would be:

Introduction to Fingerprints – the importance of reading the crime scene with the aim of locating evidence fingerprints

Developing and Recovering Fingerprints-understanding the conditions affecting recovery and development of finger prints and the value of evidence fingerprint.

Practical Exercises/Hands On-the students will be requested to bring a long certain items for practical. They will be required to develop and recover prints from those items.

Cyanoacrylate processing- this the point where the instructor comes in to evaluate and suggest to the students the glue projects from preceding evidence.

Fluorescent Fingerprint Development- the students would learn how to develop fingerprint from fluorescent powder.

Fingerprint Photography – using Polaroid cameras and digital cameras with alternative light source, students will develop photograph fingerprints.

Photo presentation- the instructor presents the photographs developed by the students and saved in the flash disk. And finally,

Chemical processing- where several chemical procedure is to be adjusted to provide the students with understanding of many procedure CITATION Mal09 l 1033 (Maltoni, 2009).

Develop their communication skills.

The following should be the learning outcomes and the expectations of the students?

– Demonstration of understanding and knowledge of, coupled with ability to apply, the basic scientific and related principles that goes with the study of forensic science.

– Portray knowledge and understanding of and the ability put into application the scientific techniques and other analysis that are associated with analysis of appropriate crime scene investigation both blood and fingerprint.

– The students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of professional practice in crime scene investigation.
