To Spank Your Child Or Not

While spanking a child in an ideal world is not necessary, it is imperative to note that it may be necessary in some occasions. However, based on researched scholarly articles is spanking effective in disciplining children?

Evaluation of the sources

The sources used in this articles are relevant, reliable , up to date as well as accurate, most of the information in the sources are footnoted in a correct manner and the articles are referenced to acknowledge the copyright owners of the articles they are pulled from, and the sources are also consistent with the existing body of knowledge on the child punishment and discipline.

Day, R.; Peterson, G. W.; McCracken, C. (1998). “Predicting Spanking of Younger and Older Children by their Mothers and Fathers”. Journal of Marriage and the Family 60 (1): 79–94.

The effective of spanking of children is relative to the person spanking, for example, while it is a common thing in schools, it may not be effective at home. This is because most chidklren do not view parental spanking as a fair punishment but as away by which are not show their dislike and rejection. Most children become even worse after spanking. Longitudinal studies show that there is e marked negative outcomes in spanked children. The argument for this study is that spanking may be effective, if offered by authorities other than the parents.

Taylor, CA. Manganello, JA. Lee, SJ.; Rice, JC. (May 2010). “Mothers’ spanking of 3-year-old children and subsequent risk of children’s aggressive behavior”. Pediatrics 125 (5): e1057–65.

Delivery of punishment should ever be personal, most of the punished children end up becoming aggressive as the punishment remains in the memory of the of the child and has psychological effects on the child, these children base their reasoning on the memory of their parents punishments in reaction to their daily experiences and are always aggressive.

Statistics Sweden. (1996). Spanking and other forms of physical punishment. Stockholm: Statistics Sweden

According To statistics Sweden (1243), there are strong correlation between child spanking and juvenile delinquency. Most of the children who are spanked heavily by their parent tend to become more delinquent at a very young age. Most of them run away from home after punishment and end up in the street where they meet their peers and become initiated in to the crime wave. This article proposes that child punishment should be commensurate to the mistake made and if possible should be delivered by authorities such as school heads.

Spanking is also reserved for the worst offenders and nit just every child. Spanking children with minor mistakes might lead to disastrous events such as suicide, and aggressiveness. Wrong spanking might not produce the desired results in children. This may also lead to loss of respect.

Children should be warned that negative behaviors might lead to quick and certain discipline. Unlike spanking, warnings are effective and non humilitive. Warnings help children learn the clear boundaries. This article also vouches against punishments.

Straus, Murray A. (1971). “Some Social Antecedents of Physical Punishment: a linkage theory interpretation”. Journal of Marriage and the Family 33 (4): 658–663.

This article vouches for spanking but argues that spanking may not be effective, if the behaviors leading to spanking do not deserve e spanking. Children may view spanking as personal fight and not disciplinary action. It is important to understand and determine the kind of behaviors that deserve spanking. However, it argues that toddlers and teens must be allowed to make mistakes and have those behaviors that are appropriate. This punishment should be geared at establishing authority in a mature way and with love.

Conclusion

Most Parents tend to love their children and may feel pain spanking their beloved children not until they realize that their love is appreciated and the child is spoilt beyond help. It is also imperative to note that they use of non abusive punishments is healthy. On the other hand, many child psychologists tend to support spanking as a disciplinary action on children. However, if a child is spanked with fairness, love and care, is a very effective disciplinary technique? The best recommendation is that the usefulness of child spanking is relative to parents spanking their children

Directed Reading-Thinking Activity

The Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) comprehensively guides the students through enquiring about a text, making of predictions then through the text to refute or confirm the predictions that had been made earlier. This process is used to encourage the learner to be both active and thoughtful readers. The learners’ activeness is attained when he or she is involved in answering the questions that the teacher asks regarding the plot development of the story. The learner is influenced to be thoughtful when he is required to give his or her views concerning what will happen next in the story. When the objectives are achieved, comprehension level will be high. The skill of comprehension is very important since it helps the learner through the academic process both presently and later on as well. It activates the prior knowledge of the student and helps in the strengthening of reading and critical thinking skills. The student is also encouraged to monitor their grasp of the text during the reading sessions.

During this activity, all the three students actively participated and creativity was observed in the predictions that they made. All the students had something to say and they shouted answers at the top of their voices so that I could listen to their ideas. When one student said a prediction that they didn’t support they insisted that I listen to all their predictions before I could continue with reading the story. They had fun during the reading when they realized that some of their predictions came true so they laughed about it in excitement. I also noticed that the loss of attention that occurred a few minutes into the other classes was not experienced as the students were attentive all through. This positively reflects on the concentration boost that the students had been given due to the directed reading-thinking activity.

The predictions that the students made were very creative displaying both comprehension and critical thinking. Some of the predictions were accurate even though the students had never read the story before. This shows that they were following the story and could analyze what would transpire next in regard to the plot development. I am happy with the effectiveness of the DR-TA format as it has produced tremendous results. Moreover, I can use this activity when dealing with a small number of students and its effectiveness will be almost or even the same as that when I use it on teaching a group of students. This means I don’t need to worry about which number of students to use the activity on since it is always effective.

Breaking the reading into small pieces gave the students ample time to process information and give good feedback too. The learners’ minds are not that advanced therefore breaking the reading into small pieces would help them understand the plot of the story and also be able to give appropriate predictions. I also adjusted the amount of reading based on the difficulty of the text and this helped get the students get comfortable I think incorporating writing into this activity is advisable.

The students would write their predictions down and then reading them out loud so as to improve both their writing and reading skills. The first student to write down a complete sentence on the predictions would be the first to read their predictions. This helps introduce competitiveness in the classroom as the students struggled to emerge the first at writing their predictions down. DRTA, I noticed, creates a huge impact on the literacy skills of the learner. They were also to create a picture of the characters in their minds then draw them and give them names. This helped boost the creativity of my students as they were drawing from their imagination.

Outline

The mission and vision of Country Acres

Major donors

Need for educators and counselors

Donations in form of time

Spiritual growth

Children are the most important resources in our country giving us hope for the future. Most children wondering the streets have suffered because of the mistakes of the present generation. We need to take it upon ourselves to protect these children from the harsh experiences in life. County Acres is a non-profit organization that has taken on this responsibility helping children who have been abandoned, abused or neglected. They have done this for thirty five years without asking for anything in return. It is only fair for them and for the disadvantaged children if we could contribute in donating money and our time to enhance the running of this organization.

The organization is non-profit and their major donors are the Brevard County Board and the Department of Children. Country Acres highly relies on these organizations in the provision of funds which are not always available. It is also very expensive to run such an organization because children are rescued and brought here every other time. To fill the gap, the organization has received tremendous financial support from the church and other well wishers. Experienced professionals have been hired by the organization to help the children transition to respectable members of the society. Educators and counselors are indispensable, but if the organization will not provide the necessary funds for education and counseling, the children will continue to experience one problem after another. The members of staff have also come up with various projects that will help in enriching the lives of these children. Without the necessary funds for implementation, these projects will only be a dream.

I therefore, urge the local community to make donations to see to it that the organization runs efficiently and for a long time. Let us all come together to contribute to this worthy cause. The Country Acres have come so far and all they are asking form us is a little support for them to achieve their vision. All your contributions will be highly appreciated no matter the amount donated. If we do not come together to support these children, then they will feel neglected, just how they felt before they were brought to this institution. It would be unfortunate if we did not help a defenseless child realize their dream because we were too proud to give what we have.

I know most of you will claim that they can not afford to make donations and so they have no way of helping these children. All you have to do is dedicate some of your time to this organization. It is equally important as making donations. Most of the children in this organization are psychologically bruised due to the traumatic experience they went through before they were brought here. Spending time with other people and interacting in social events will make the children feel cared for and accepted by the society. This can be through sports and games and talent shows so as to bring out the talents of these children when they are still young.

A lot of help is required since the organization is understaffed. Most people working either part-time or full time are volunteers who are not easy to come by. I do not mean that you have to spend all your time in Country Acres taking care of these children. Dedicating only a few hours in week is more than the organization can ask for because we understand that you are all very busy people.

I would like to thank the church for the continuous support it has shown to this organization. The church has help mould the spiritual growth of these children. Most of them require care and counseling because the experiences they have been through are not those that one can easily forget. Let us all join the church and encourage them to keep supporting the organization. You are all welcome to the prayer and Bible study sessions held by the church. This way, we can all contribute to the children’s spiritual growth.

We all have to agree that Country Acres is a respectable organization that has taken a huge responsibility in taking care of these children. This is a venture that most of us would hesitate to take because it requires a lot of dedication. Starting such kind of an organization to fulfill a worthy cause relying on donors is not a walk in the park. Country Acres has already done most of the work and has done it for thirty five years without complaining. All they are asking from us is to lend them a hand so that they can continue to do what they do best. Let us all come together and support Country Acres support the children.
