Argumentative Essay Advocating Change
Argumentative Essay Advocating Change
Business managers are often faced with the challenge of advocating change in today’s dynamic organizations. As a manager, you will need to convince your boss, peers, employees, clients, or others to make significant business changes, such as modifying a process, abandoning a program, revising a plan, rethinking a goal, or adopting a new system – changes that can add value to your organization.
Scenario:
Consider a recent work experience, preferably during this past year, and identify a significant, not minor, change that would benefit the organization. You should challenge yourself by selecting a controversial topic that will elicit resistance, skepticism, or even hostility from the audience. You will need to choose a debatable topic to respond to the prompt: “What significant change would you advocate for an organization in which you have recently worked and Why?” If you have limited work experience, you may select a family-owned business in which you are very familiar.
Audience;
the natural audience that you choose for your topic – the person(s) who have authority to approve your proposed change (e.g., the executive committee, department members, client groups, or owners). Your objective is to analyze your target audience (use the worksheet on page 3) and adapt your strategy (i.e., rational, emotional, and/or credibility appeals) to persuade the decision makers.
