Statement of Purpose, Letter of Intent, Personal Statement, Admission Letter, Cover Letter

– Write an essay for a graduate school application, such as a statement of purpose, letter of intent, or personal statement. These essays can go by different names and have different purposes but often contain similar content. For a general overview of statements of purpose, visit the Purdue Owl website for Statements of Purpose (on the left side of the screen you’ll find many links related to Graduate School Applications and Statements of Purpose).

Then, perform an online search for graduate school essays in your field. Also visit the websites of schools you may apply to for specific advice related to written statements for their programs. (For this assignment, you could write a statement based on the instructions of a specific graduate school program that interests you.) Finally, seek advice from family, friends, and professors who have attended graduate school in your field.
While there are many ways to write a successful statement of purpose, I suggest you answer many of the questions from the Purdue Owl website.

Focus on answering the following questions:

What matters to you and why? (Who are you and how have you personally interpreted events in your life?)
How are you unique from other candidates?
Why is the program you are applying to a good fit for you? (Be specific, mention professors by name, research projects, facilities, specific opportunities, etc.)
What kind of work are you interested in doing in graduate school? (Be as specific as possible.)
