Applied Communicable Disease Control

You are the Communicable Disease Control consultant in charge of a District [population 250,
000] where, due to a highly efficient MMR vaccine campaign aimed at infants 13-15 months of
age, the incidence of measles has fallen below 1-2/100 000 per year for the last 5 years. Five
cases of measles are then notified in one month in your district.
Describe and discuss how you would deal with this situation. Justify your approach with
reference to characteristics of measles and the scenario given.
Important: This is a practical assignment, but you should show an understanding of theory,
where relevant. Do not, however, simply reproduce sections of the course textbooks, as I
will be penalised for this – the purpose of these assignments is to test how you apply theory to
practice.
Textbooks are:
1. Controlling Communicable Disease – Norman D. Noah.
2. Applied Communicable Disease Control- Rudge, James.
What to include in the word count
• The final word count should include the main text, citations, captions, titles, subtitles and footnotes and should be within the limit noted above.
• Tables, figures, bibliographies/reference lists and appendices should not be included in the count, but should be used appropriately and not as a means of
keeping within the word limit.
• Using tables, figures or appendices as a means of keeping within the word limit may
result in those item(s) being ignored by markers or result in grade reduction/s.
• Students may include up to a maximum of 6 figures, graphs and tables combined. It
should be possible to fully understand and mark an assignment without reference to
the appendices.
• Be very careful about word limits. Keeping within the word limit set for an assignment is a requirement, not a suggestion.
